Are you looking for a Workshop & Prototyping Technician role in Sydney? Do you have experience of operating and maintaining CNC machines and other workshop equipment? My client is a global innovator of highly complex medical/healthcare devices looking for an experienced Technician to provide prototyping services to the product design and other teams in the technology development department, using tool room equipment and rapid prototyping machines.

The Role

In this Workshop & Prototyping Technician role, you'll provide prototyping services to the product design and other teams in the technology development department, using tool room equipment and rapid prototyping machines. You will build prototypes, fixtures and equipment as specified by designers and engineers and help them to specify parts to suit the available machines. You will maintain workshop equipment and develop prototyping and manufacturing methodologies to improve in-house capabilities and capacity. You will work with external manufacturing vendors to develop prototype and production solutions to reduce cost and lead-time. You will also support departments within the business relating to their workshop and prototyping needs.

  • Operate and maintain CNC machines i.e. milling & turning equipment including generation of tool paths etc.

  • Operate and maintain other workshop equipment such as manual milling machines and lathes and sheet metal equipment i.e. benders, guillotines etc.

  • Operate and maintain rapid prototyping machines, e.g. FDM, SLA, laser-cutter, vacuum-cast, silicone elastomer parts using rapid-prototyped moulds

  • Operate and maintain inspection equipment owned by the R&PD team i.e. MicroVu CMM

  • Consulting with engineers, use 3D CAD to manipulate the component design to enable easy machining & processing

  • Build parts as requested by designers and engineers

  • Assist designers and engineers in detail design of parts, fixtures and equipment

  • Work with designers, engineers and external manufacturing vendors in design of components to develop prototype & production solutions to reduce cost and lead-time

  • Hand-finish machined parts e.g. file and polish

  • Finish rapid prototype parts

  • Maintain hand tools and consumables required for workshop operation.

  • Practice and enforce safe workshop operation.

  • Assess & train new members of staff regarding their suitability to use the workshop and prototyping facilities

Skills and experience

  • 5-10 years of hands-on working experience in an engineering workshop as a machinist or toolmaker (Cert III Eng. - Mech Trade (Fitter/Machinist)

  • Trade qualifications in the use of mechanical workshop equipment

  • Ability to read, interpret and produce detailed component drawings with understanding of

tolerances

  • CNC machine programming, operating and setting skills and conventional machining skills to fine tolerances

  • Proficiency with mechanical workshop equipment and techniques

  • Practical knowledge of using quality control measuring instruments

  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical design engineering, CAD modelling, and product design for manufacture

  • Ability to develop and implement ideas into CAD models using 3D CAD

  • Confidence dealing with multiple tasks & competing demands

  • Proactive, high attention to detail, organised and self-sufficient

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with external contractors and suppliers

You will be offered ongoing training in Workshop safety procedures, Quality Management System and additional training as required.
