Are you looking for a Prototype & Development Technician role in Sydney? Do you have experience of manufacture and assembly of prototype components, assemblies and devices? My client is a global innovator of highly complex medical/healthcare devices looking for a proactive Engineer/ Technician to develop, build and test electro -mechanical sub systems as well as to use workshop machine tools to design, manufacture and assemble special purpose equipment.

The Role

In this Prototype & Development Technician role, you'll be part of the Research & Product Development function, contributing to collaborative projects incorporating product design, process development, manufacturing automation and software control. You will support R&PD projects with the manufacture and assembly of precision prototype components, assemblies and devices. You will design, manufacture and assemble special purpose equipment, including mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems e.g. test and measurement rigs. You will also liaise with design engineers to produce components using in-house prototype equipment via processes including manual machining, laser and water jet cutting, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing and CAM and CNC machining technologies.

  • Interpret SolidWorks & CREO detail drawings

  • Test equipment construction, including mechanical, electrical and pneumatic assembly

  • Responsible for equipment efficiency, maintenance and continuous improvement

  • Liaise with subcontractors to ensure parts are available for construction

  • DFMEA, FAI, GD&T, CPM & GR&R & tolerance analysis

  • Integrate electronic components and systems into products

  • Perform mechanical product research in a laboratory environment, including life testing

  • Develop & debug electro-mechanical sub-system components

  • Execute test plans and document results so that problems can be reproduced

  • Generate test reports & summaries/conclusions to drive development

  • Verify and validate product development against actual product capabilities / requirements

  • Prototype production of test fixtures to compliment the testing process

  • Produce design-related documentation to meet medical device requirements (ISO13485)

  • Liaise with the design and NPI team to improve product quality, reliability and manufacturability

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated skills in the manufacture of high precision mechanisms using manual manufacturing machine tools (turning, milling etc.)

  • Experience with manufacture of components in various metals and polymers

  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Manufacture and CNC machining centres

  • Experience in the design and assembly of pneumatic systems

  • Experience in maintaining tolerances in the manufacture of complex assemblies

  • Interpersonal skills and abilities to communicate and work in a team environment with all levels of the organisation

  • Proven ability to rapidly grasp new technical concepts and find innovative solutions to challenging engineering workshop problems

  • Able to work in accordance with the drawing and issue controls defined by company systems and within ISO standards

You will be offered ongoing training in Workshop safety procedures, Quality Management System and additional training as required.
